In 2009 hundreds of millions of people around the world showed their support by turning off their lights and electronic equipment in 1 hour from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm on March 27 to participate. Earth Hour 2010 will continue to be a global call to action to every individual, every business and every community. A call to stand up, to show leadership and be responsible for our future.

ABOUT EARTH HOUR

Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned their lights off for one hour to make their stand against climate change. Only a year later and Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating. Global landmarks such as the, Sydney Harbour Bridge, The CN Tower in Toronto, The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome’s Colosseum, all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour.

In March 2009, hundreds of millions of people took part in the third Earth Hour. Over 4000 cities in 88 countries officially switched off to pledge their support for the planet, making Earth Hour 2009 the world’s largest global climate change initiative.

Earth Hour 2010 takes place on Saturday 27 March at 8.30pm (local time) and is a global call to action to every individual, every business and every community throughout the world. It is a call to stand up, to take responsibility, to get involved and lead the way towards a sustainable future. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Europe to Asia to the Americas will stand in darkness. People across the world from all walks of life will turn off their lights and join together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common – our planet. So sign up now and let’s make 2010 the biggest Earth Hour yet!.

It’s Showtime! Show the world what can be done.

Earth Hour by WWF

Earth Hour is organized by WWF. With almost 5 million supporters and a global network in over 100 countries, it’s one of the world’s largest and most respected independent conservation organizations. WWF’s mission is to stop the degradation of the Earth’s natural environment and build a future where people live in harmony with nature.

Earth Hour timeline

Turn back the clock on Earth Hour and discover why, how, where and when it all started.

Why get involved?

Put simply, because our future depends on it!

Earth Hour has done a lot to raise awareness of climate change issues. But there’s more to it than switching off lights for one hour once a year. It’s all about giving people a voice on the future of our planet and working together to create a sustainable low carbon future for our planet.

The future can be bright

New economic modelling indicates the world has just five years to initiate a low carbon industrial revolution before runaway climate change becomes almost inevitable. But it can be done, and the long term benefits will be enormous.

So now’s the time to take a stand and give world leaders the mandate they need to make the right climate deal.

Lagu Kebesaran Negeri Perak or Allah Lanjutkan Usia Sultan is the state anthem of Perak, Malaysia.

The state anthem was created during a state visit of Sultan Idris of Perak to England in 1888. It was noticed that no anthem existed to greet the Sultan.

The Aide-de-camp of the Sultan, Raja Mansur ibni Sultan Abdullah, did not dare to tell that no anthem exists and so instead hummed a song he knew from the Seychelles, a melody originally written by Pierre Jean de Beranger. After he told the Sultan about it, the sultan accepted the song as the anthem. The lyrics were written by Raja Ngah Manur bin Raja Abdullah.

In 1957 the national anthem of Malaysia, Negaraku, was selected to use the same melody.

Shiang Yang Scout Open Troop has organized a recycle project from 5 July – 19 July 2009. The theme of this project was “Caring Community, Ours Responsible”. It was a project in which Shiang Yang Scout Open Troop contributed money to Bercham Charity Fund that will be used for helping misfortune group. This project was inspired after a local media reported about the 3 children living in Taman Cahaya, Bercham who never been to school because of poverty. Their father has passed away while mother is a psychopath. This issue is being concerned by the Perak’s Menteri Besar, as a result, a charity fund was launched to assist them. The charity fund is managed by the cooperation of 5 parties which are the board of administration of SRJK (C) Bercham, PIBG of SRJK (C) Bercham, alumi association of SRJK (C) Bercham, Bercham’s Rukun Tetangga and Buddha Association of Bercham. The objectives of this charity fund are to support their living’s cost and help them to study at SRJK (C) Bercham. A discussion has been carried by thescout master of Shiang Yang Scout Open Troop with the chairman of Rukun Tetangga Bercham. As a result, this recycle event was proposed.

The recycle project was officially launched on 5 July 2009 by the chairman of Rukun Tetangga Bercham, Mr Tan Swee Kong with the attendanced of Shiang Yang Scout Troop members and public. The launching event is published in Nan Yang Siang Pao newspaper on the following day. Along the collection period starting 6 July 2009, all the recycle items are gathered at Shiang Yang Scout house. Recycle items which contributed by troop members and public are such as newspaper, books, aluminum tin, plastic bottle, old electronic appliances, vehicle battery and old machinery. We received great support from members and public along the project. A total of RM480 was generated by selling all the recycle items. The handover event was held on 19 July 2009 with the representative from the Charity Fund, Mr. Tan Swee Kong.

As a conclusion, this project is succeed in which it bring a meaningful message to the public in caring about the community. In addition, members are willing to contribute on the charity fund without spending their own money but through the collection of recycle items. We believed that this kind of community service’s event can be carried on in the future.

Dear Scout,

On Saturday, March 28, 2009, at 8:30 pm, I am taking part in Earth
Hour – a global event in which millions of people will turn out their
lights to make a statement of concern about our planet and climate
change. I want to invite you to join, too!

Sponsored by World Wildlife Fund, Earth Hour got started just two
years ago and is now the largest event of its kind in the world. Last
year, more than 50 million participated and the lights went out at
the Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Sydney
Opera House and the Coliseum in Rome, just to name a few.

This year, Earth Hour will be even bigger – already 250 cities in 74
countries have agreed to take part including Las Vegas, Los
Angeles, Moscow, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Shanghai and Mexico
City. And right here in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur and several other
cities will be turning out our lights, too.

But Earth Hour isn’t just for big cities – anyone can participate. To
get a better sense of the event, check out this video at
http://youtube.com/earthhourmalaysia

Participating in Earth Hour is easy, fun and free. I hope you will join
me for this amazing event. To sign up, visit
http://www.earthhour.org/malaysia. where you’ll learn more including
ways you can spread the word about Earth Hour, plus creative
things to do when the lights go out in case you need inspiration!

Let’s show the world Malaysians are united in the fight against
global warming. Please pass this note along to anyone you think
might want to take part. Let’s all come together and switch off our
lights on March 28 at 8:30 pm.

Seeking new friends: Penang Scouts Commissioner Zulkafli Kamaruddin trying to communicate with foreign Scouts via amateur radio after the opening of Jota-Joti at Wisma Pengakap.

20 October 2008, COMMUNICATION over amateur radio (ham radio) frequencies is still a hit among Scouts and Guides at Wisma Pengakap at Penang’s 51th Jamboree-On-The-Air (JOTA) despite the Internet.

Organising committee secretary Tan Thean Wooi said many participants found it exciting using the traditional way to communicate as they could hear the voice of their counterparts.

“It is fun talking to them over the radio instead of using the Internet where we only see written words.

“It is also an opportunity for us to build friendships with our counterparts from all over the world,” he said.

Tan was among some 350 Scouts, Girl Guides and cub Scouts from various schools on the island who gathered at the site for the JOTA and Jamboree-On-The-Internet (JOTI).

They were so determined to have fun that even the scorching heat failed to dampen their spirits.

All they had in mind during the one-day event was to complete the various activities and take home the Challenge Badge.

State Scouts Commissioner Zulkafli Kamaruddin, who launched the event, said participants should take advantage of the event to exchange ideas and experiences with their counterparts from all over the world.

“Participation in JOTI, especially will enhance their knowledge in information technology which is growing at a fast pace,” he said in his speech.

Global contact: Scouts trying to communicate with their foreign counterparts via the Internet after the opening of the Jota-Joti.

JOTI is an international scout meeting on the Internet and is an official event of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement.

It is held in October when thousands of Scouts from all over the world would meet and communicate with each other over the Internet.

JOTI is combined with the JOTA, an event where Scouts can communicate with each other over amateur radio (ham radio) frequencies. (Source from Thestar.com.my)

For those scout who have join the Joti, you could download your Joti certificate at the website. Below is the sample of the certificate.

Any reader have know any new friend around the world? what are you talking about. let share with other..

When Scouts want to meet young people from another country they usually think of attending a World Jamboree or another international gathering. But few people realize that each year about half-a-million Scouts and Guides “get together” over the airwaves for the annual Jamboree-on-the–Air (JOTA). Modern communication technology offers Scouts the exciting opportunity to make friends in other countries without even leaving home…..

Since 1958 when the first jamboree-on-the-Air was held, thousands of Scouts and Guides have “met” each other through this event. Not only is it fun to talk to Scouts from other parts of the world but it provides also a chance to find out about other countries and about Scouting elsewhere. Many contacts made during the JOTA have resulted in penpals and links between scout troops that have lasted for many years.

With no restrictions on age, on the number that can participate and at little or no expense, the JOTA provides an opportunity for Scouts and Guides to contact each other by amateur radio. The radio stations are operated by licensed amateur radio operators. Many Scouts and leaders hold licences and have their own stations, but the majority participates in the JOTA through stations operated by local radio clubs and individual radio amateurs. Today some operators even use television or computer linked communications.

What is Jamboree-on-the-Internet (JOTI)?

In November 1996 the World Scout Committee, noting that Scouting already had a considerable presence on the Internet, and that there was already an informal and rapidly growing Jamboree on the Internet, decided that JOTI should become an official international Scouting event, and that it should be held on the same weekend as the Jamboree on the Air (JOTA).

Therefore, the World Scout Jamboree on the Internet is to be held on the third full weekend of October each year, starting at 00:00 hours local time on the Saturday and concluding 48 hours later at 24:00 hours local time on the Sunday.

Special Internet Jamborees may also be organized in conjunction with local, national and international Scouting events which are held at other times of the year.
